HE WAS THANKFUL
He was thankful
I wanna tell you a story ‘bout my dear old dad He always did the best with the best he had He was thankful from when he was a boy Told my brother and me from when we were kids ’Bout the life he had and the things he did And when the two of us weren't thankful he got annoyed
Seems his whole family lived in their one-room digs With both my grandfolks and five kids Two mangy dogs and a cousin from down the road And there sure weren't much to go around He got hand me downs and downs and downs And he was thankful, ‘cause that’s all he know'd
And he walked to school up hill both ways In the scorching heat and the pouring rain And the driving snow, no shoes on his feet Rags to wear and dirt to eat and he was thankful
Well he wanted a bike but he was outta luck ‘Cause there just weren’t money fer such stuff So he got himself a job when he was twelve And he worked in the packing sheds at night And though he never made enough to buy that bike He bought some parts and he built one by himself And he was thankful
And he walked to school up hill both ways In the scorching heat and the pouring rain And the driving snow, no shoes on his feet Rags to wear and dirt to eat and he was thankful
Well time flew by and he got older His brothers run off and become soldiers He was too young to fight in World War II In a few short years little was he knowing Korea'd be calling and he'd be going And he'd be thankful to be a soldier too
And he learned to march up hill both ways In the scorching heat and the pouring rain And the driving snow, with boots on his feet Fatigues to wear K-Rats to eat and he was thankful
And he grew up so thankful to be free Every night he'd thank the lord for what he had and what would be Yeah he was thankful
Well he hit the road one fateful day To seek his fortune and make his way He'da told you his life was Heaven sent Well he met my ma, he had two kids My brother and me turned out pretty good He's left us now but before he went He was thankful
Well he built his whole world with his two hands An unfortunate boy, one hell of a man Lord I'm thankful Thankful Thankful He was thankful
