Biography

” Downtown” Dave  Land

Dave Land started his musical journey at an early age.  After a year of guitar class in 8th grade, he knew music was going to be a major force in his life.  By the time Dave got to high school he was playing guitar and singing for a number of different projects with styles ranging from rock to country to rhythm and blues.

After high school, Dave settled into the role of lead singer/rhythm guitarist for a rock and roll oldies band called Johnny Ouzo and the Spartans.  When the group disbanded approximately 3 years later, Dave began performing solo under the name Johnny Ouzo.

Dave spent a number of years on the solo circuit until (thanks to an impromptu jam session and a Beatles songbook) he joined forces with former TRAK lead guitarist Todd Derita.  Together they launched a successful acoustic duo known as the Ouzo Brothers, which lasted approximately 2 1/2 years.  When the “Brothers” parted company, Dave rejoined the solo circuit until 1993 when he would release his first album, “Outlaws and Outsiders”, under the Ouzo Brothers name.  After a lukewarm response, Dave returned to the solo circuit using his real name Dave Land.

In 2001, Dave opened a music store called Downtown Music in Martinez, CA.  Through the store,  “Downtown Dave” became acquainted with a number of local musicians that he would bring together to form his band, The Downtowners, in 2003.  Dave recorded his second and third albums with The Downtowners; “Pirate Eyes” in 2005 and “America Rocks” in 2006.  During the same time period, Dave started a spinoff project called Big Wave Dave and the Breakers, a party band specializing in old rock and roll classics for hours of mindless fun.  Thanks to the popularity of both bands, he was able to shift his professional focus entirely to music.

Dave decided to leave the music retail business in 2008.  The Good Stuff Guitar Shop now operates in the original Downtown Music location, and Dave can still be found there giving occasional guitar lessons.  With his newfound freedom, Dave has been able to concentrate more on performances and songwriting.  In 2014,Dave with the Downtowners (Natalie and Tsunami),signed on to record on the Tays International Music label  and released his first album, “Just Another Bad Guy”, in September 2014.   Dave’s current release,”Here We Go Again”,  debuted in August 2015. Since the release of “Here We Go Again”, Dave and the Downtowners have filmed and released two videos, (San Francisco Giants) San Francisco Style in August 2015, and Rock and Roll Cowboy in September 2015. The “single” of (San Francisco Giants) San Francisco Style was also recorded and released in August 2015. Dave is currently working his next project, the “Rock and Roll Cowboy” album, which is scheduled to be released in late 2015 or early 2016.

Throughout his musical career, Dave has been fortunate enough to share the stage with an array of musical personalities including:  Michael McNevin, Danna Aliano, Steve Oliver, Freddie Roulette, Megan Slankard, Harvey Mandel, Elvin Bishop and Don McClean.  The years have been good, the gigs have been great, and the people have been amazing!   It’s been a heck of a ride, but hang on tight,  it’s not over by a long shot!
