I Waved Goodbye

Words and Music  by Dave Land

It started out the same most everyday

He held my hand and he asked if I could stay

I said, “Yes, but only for a few

I’m off to work and I’ve got a lot to do.”

I said, “Why don’t you run and play?”

He ran back and grabbed my leg

His teacher took him and held him up

So he could watch me drive away

I kissed his cheek and I left him with a smile

He watched out the window for a while

It was the hardest day in all of his two years

His eyes filled up with tears

As I waved good-bye

Nights went ’bout the the same as everyday

I tucked him in and he asked if could stay

I said, “Yes, but only for a few

It’s bedtime now and I’ve still got things to do.”

He said, “I want to hear a song.”

I turned that music box of his on

I said, “That sure sounds nice

Bet you’ll be asleep before too long.”

I kissed his cheek and I left him with a smile

He looked up from his pillow for a while

It was the hardest day in all of his two years

His eyes filled up with tears

As I waved good-bye

It’s hard to say just who learned more

From bedtimes, or our trips to school

’cause when you think you’ve seen it all

Something jumps up and breaks the rule

It started out like any other day

He held my hand and he asked if I could stay

I said, “Yes, but only for a few

I’m off to work and I’ve got a lot to do.”

He said, “I want to go outside.”

I watched him give it one mor try

A little girl with a two-seat trike

Pulled up and said, “Do you want a ride?”

I held my breath as he climbed into the seat

Off they went, he glanced back once at me

He rode around the playground with a smile

I watched out the window for a while

It was the hardest day in all of his two years

My eyes filled up with tears

As I waved good-bye

My heart filled up with tears

As I waved good-bye
